Skiving (Carbide Rehobbing)

Gear skiving or hard re-hobbing is the process of using a carbide hob to re-hob spur or helical gears after heat treat (50-62 HRC) to reduce distortion errors. Gear skiving can be an economical alternative to gear grinding with comparable quality and surface finish. The gear skiving process is also effective in reducing noise. In cases where there is a shoulder close to the gear teeth, we are able to skive where grinding may not be possible by using a small diameter skiving hob.

The skiving process requires special equipment to synchronize the hobs with the workpiece. At First Gear, our experts perform the skiving process on almost a daily basis. Gear skiving or hard re-hobbing is possible on fine pitch gears where gear grinding may not be feasible.
